what generation is my glock

What Generation Is My Glock - Confused by all the models of Glock? You're not the only one, but we're here to walk you through them!

Glock is the most widely issued service pistol in modern times, which is hugely impressive for a company founded to make curtain rods. Gaston Gluck had no experience in making weapons, but he had experience in polymer manufacturing. He gathered European handgun experts, prototyped the Glock 17 in 1982 and the rest is glorious Austrian history.

Glock pistols are polymer-framed, semi-automatic, short-recoil, bolt-action, assault-fired handguns. Well, most of them are – the rimfire G44 is a blowback operated gun and the only gun that breaks the mold. Glock pistols come in a variety of calibers and sizes. These were not the first polymer frame pistols, but they were the first very successful polymer pistols.

The G17 was the first model produced and designed to meet a requirement within the Austrian Army. The specific needs of the Austrian military have driven the development of the weapon and defined Glock pistols to this day. The Austrian Army needed safe, lightweight, high capacity and reliable semi-auto pistols and Glocks.

Glock has a simple way of naming their pistols. Each model is assigned a number followed by the letter G, which presumably stands for Glock. The numbers have nothing to do with the gun and may seem arbitrary to many – for example, the G45 is not a 45 caliber handgun, it is actually a 9mm.

Numbers are assigned to patterns when they are launched, not in the order they are released. So while the G20 and 21 began development before the 22 and 23, the 22 and 23 were released first.

The G17 hit the streets at a time when manual safeties were common on handguns. Glock's Plastic Fantastics didn't have a manual safety, but that didn't mean they were unsafe. Glock refers to their pistols as the Glock Safe Action Pistol with three built-in independent safeties.

The trigger safety is the famous little doohickey that sits in the center of the trigger. When you pull the trigger, your finger depresses the trigger safety so that the trigger cannot be depressed without activating the trigger safety.

The firing pin safety prevents the firing pin from advancing when the firing pin is cocked. When the trigger is pulled, the trigger rod pushes the firing pin safety up and out. If you release the trigger before firing, the firing pin safety automatically returns to position.

Drop Protection is a device that does exactly what you think it should. Ensures that it cannot be fired if you drop the gun. When you pull the trigger, the trigger bar lowers the safety ramp and allows the firing pin to be released.

Glock is currently in its fifth generation. New generations come when Glock makes changes both externally and internally. There is no timeline for when a Glock generation ends or begins, they improve as needed.

The release of a new generation does not always mean that the previous generations are dying out. Often newer and older Glock generations are produced side by side.

There are also guns that exist outside of the defined generations of Glock. Some weapons are ubiquitous and may lack the generation designator used to determine which generation a weapon belongs to. Some weapons are also split generations, usually between Gen 2 and Gen 3 weapons. Glock aficionados call them Gen 2.5 guns.

Gen 1 - The first Glocks on the market. Plain and simple: they are weapons that work. The Gen 1 is built entirely from one pistol, the Glock 17.

Gen 2 - Glock added different sizes and calibers with the Gen 2 models. A metal plate with the serial number was inserted, the guide rod system became a one-piece construction, checkered grips were added front and rear, and the magazine base plate was changed.

Gen 3 - The third generation where rails became a standard option on guns larger than subcompacts. Fingers are added to the grip and scallops are cut into the left and right sides of the frame which act as thumb wrists.

Internal changes include a cross pin above the trigger pin to reduce stress on the lock block. The extractor now also rose after the chamber was loaded and acted as a loaded chamber indicator.

Gen 4 - With the Gen 4, Glock made the pistol grip slightly smaller and added a modular backstrap system to change the size of the grip. The grip was also more aggressively structured, and the magazine release was made reversible for lefties.

The Gen 4 also had a dual-spring recoil bar that reduces felt recoil. Gen 4 was also the introduction of MOS guns which allowed easier mounting of optics.

Gen 5 - The latest Glock generation is the Gen 5. These pistols saw the removal of fingers, the magazine well has been enlarged for faster reloading, a high-relief cut has been made in the trigger guard for superior grip, and the slide is now present. Bilateral.

In addition, Glock added a new match-quality barrel to the guns, and the cross pin above the trigger guard was also removed.

Now that you have the basics down, we can dive into specific models, categories and more in Part 2!

Austrian engineer Gaston Glock founded his company GLOCK in 1963. Early in the company's history, they produced knives, shell casings and machine gun belt links for the Austrian army. The first Glock 17 was produced in the early 80s after winning a contract with the Austrian army, and quickly gained a reputation for reliability, ease of cleaning and accuracy. Glock soon won contracts with both Norway and Sweden and entered the US market in 1986, attracting the attention of US law enforcement.

Glock made several major changes to their "correct" handgun in 1988, the most notable being a 6-piece upgrade kit that fixed some safety issues with the Gen 1 models. Checkering was added to the front strap and rear strap for the first time, and several additional calibers and models were introduced, including the ultra-popular Glock 19 and the subcompact Glock 26.

Generation 3 Glocks were introduced in 1998 with mostly minor changes implemented including the addition of an accessory rail to allow the attachment of optics and lights. This generation also included the controversial thumb track and thumb rest, which started years of debate about their usefulness. This era also expanded into new calibers with the Glock 31 (.357 Sig) and Glock 37 (.45 GAP) and began offering new finishes (FDE and Olive Drab).

The Glock Generation 4 was launched at the 2010 SHOT Show. The most notable difference between the Gen 4 and 3 is the introduction of the Glock modular backstrap that allows users to swap out the backstrap for different trigger accesses. Dual magazine springs were added to reduce felt recoil and "Gen 4" is now engraved on the side of the stock slide. Several new Glock models were unveiled, including the Glock 19X which blended the best of the Glock 17 and 19 models by offering a full-length grip that accepted the Glock 17 magazine with a Glock 19-length slide.

Finally, we arrive at Generation 5, Glock's current attempt at perfection. A few cosmetic changes were made, the most notable being the nDLC coating on the slide. Finger tracks were not included for the first time since the Generation 2 model and the slide stop lever was made ambidextrous to suit left-handed drivers. Glock also decided to modify the magazine well for easier reloading by adding a small chamfer and float. Finally, Glock Marksman barrels were introduced, with tighter tolerances for improved accuracy.
